Celebrating the Festival of Lights
At Little Lionhearts Nursery School, we love celebrating the wonderful diversity within our community — and Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is one of the brightest and most meaningful festivals of the year.
Diwali is celebrated by millions of people around the world and symbolises the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and hope over despair. Traditionally, families light diyas (small oil lamps), decorate their homes with colourful rangoli patterns, share sweets, and spend time with loved ones.
Learning Through Light and Colour
Our children explored the magic of Diwali through storytelling, music, sensory play, and creative arts. They designed paper diyas, created vibrant rangoli patterns, and listened to the story of Rama and Sita, discovering the deeper meaning behind this joyful celebration.
These activities not only enriched their understanding of different cultures but also nurtured curiosity, respect, and empathy — key values we encourage every day at Little Lionhearts Nursery School.
Why We Celebrate Different Festivals
Celebrating a variety of cultural festivals in early years offers powerful learning opportunities that help shape children’s personal, social, and emotional development:
- Promotes Inclusion and Respect – Children learn that everyone is unique and that our differences make the world more colourful and interesting.
- Builds Understanding and Tolerance – By exploring diverse traditions, children develop empathy and open-mindedness from a young age.
- Encourages Curiosity and Conversation – Festivals spark meaningful discussions, helping children expand their language and communication skills.
- Strengthens Identity and Belonging – Seeing their own culture represented and valued boosts children’s confidence and self-esteem.
- Enhances Creativity and Imagination – Through art, dance, music, and storytelling, children connect learning with joy.
