Exploring Growth and Change
This season, our preschoolers at Little Lionhearts Nursery School have been learning all about growth, change, and natural processes through a series of fun, hands-on activities centred around planting and pumpkins. From digging in the soil to exploring pumpkin seeds, our children have been busy observing how things grow and change in nature. 🌱🎃
Talking, Describing, and Sharing Ideas
Throughout the activities, our children developed their communication and language skills by discussing what they saw, felt, and wondered. Talking about pumpkins — their colours, textures, and shapes — encouraged the use of new vocabulary and confident speaking in small groups. These meaningful conversations also supported listening, turn-taking, and question-asking skills.
Building Physical and Social Skills
Digging, scooping, and watering provided plenty of opportunities for fine motor development while also promoting personal, social, and emotional growth. Working together in small groups helped our preschoolers practice patience, cooperation, and care for both plants and friends.
Creative and Expressive Learning
Our children extended their learning into expressive arts and design by creating pumpkin-inspired artwork and storytelling. Whether painting bright orange pumpkins or crafting imaginative pumpkin characters, they had the chance to express themselves creatively while linking back to the natural world.
Literacy and Maths in Everyday Play
Pumpkin-themed books and stories helped develop early literacy, introducing children to new words and ideas. Meanwhile, mathematics came to life as they counted pumpkin seeds, compared sizes, and measured soil — turning simple play into practical, hands-on learning.
Curiosity and Early Science
Perhaps most importantly, these experiences nurtured our children’s curiosity and enquiry skills, encouraging them to think like little scientists. Asking questions such as “What helps a plant grow?” or “Why do pumpkins have seeds?” laid the foundations for early scientific thinking.
