School Transitions
Getting the right start at school is very important for your child. At the Little Lionhearts Nursery school, we want to ensure that all our children are well prepared and equipped with the appropriate skills such as independence skills, early writing skills, early counting skills, communication skills, making friends and being generally ‘school ready!’
We work closely in partnership with parents/carers and with the schools your child will attend, to ensure a smooth transition from pre-school to school.
With your consent, we will invite local school teachers to visit us to spend time with your child and to meet with your child’s “key person” to discuss their current development, and how we can all support the child with starting school.
In preparation for starting school, the key person will plan and provide a variety of activities to promote school readiness:
- Stories around starting school
- Role play area developed into a school/classroom
- Pretending to be a teacher
- Having a packed lunch at nursery
- Having PE at nursery
- Wearing school uniform
Staff members will also include within their ‘circle time,’ how we are all feeling about starting school by, expressing our emotions and solutions e.g. if we are feeling sad, we might want to tell the teacher or cuddle our teddy. Staff members will also discuss different topics about school e.g. the children’s school- what it looks like? what they liked? What the teacher’s name is?
At Little Lionhearts Nursery School, we want to involve parents in the transition process as much as we possibly can, and to share ideas with you as to what you can do at home to support your child in being ready to start school, such as walk or drive past the building to help your child to visualise where their school is. We will also offer school readiness workshops; this will detail what the expectations are for school and how to get your child school ready. Our team are always available to discuss any queries or concerns you may have about your little one starting school.
